far no word of any injuries. let's head up to minnesota where folks there and other parts of the midwest are recovering from a record snowfall this time of year. as much as 17 inches falling in some areas. maria molina has more. >> we saw a lot of extreme weather with this storm system that left behind cool temperatures. just to recap quickly yesterday we had 10 reported tornadoes in florida, alabama portions of louisiana, mississippi. we had ongoing tornado warnings through out the day. a lot of severe weather through portions of the south. a lot of snow across portions of the midwest. one city that didn't see much with the storm system is the city of chicago. we were seeing a lack of snow since earlier in the year. no snow in chicago. we are not seeing any snow already into almost mid december out here. current temperatures behind the storm cold 10 degrees outside of minneapolis 24 in kansas city. the cold air has moved so far south we are lacking at a freezing temperature in san antonio. 29 in dallas. even in new orleans with the current temperature at 46 degrees. as we

today on the state of minnesota and direct my remarks to their wind-energy industry. minnesota, we know, is the land of a thousand lakes. and although minnesota's namesake may be its water, it has become a leader in the wind energy industry and a compelling example of the positive effects the p.t.c. can vanna stake. let me share -- can have in a stake. let me share numbers with you. as of 2011, minnesota ranks fifth nationally for the most installed wind capacity with over 2,700 megawatts. and it trails only illinois, iowa, california and texas. you can see all the blue areas on the map. those are areas in which there is installed wind operations. and in fact, wind energy meets 12 -- i'll round that up, 13% of the state's energy needs. this ranks fourth among all states. that means they're powering through the wind industry the equivalent of 770,000 minnesota homes. that number is going up. it's growing. minnesotans, we know through our two colleagues from minnesota, they take pride in everything having to do with minnesota, and well they should. and they are taking pride in being in th

away, but you wouldn't know it by the looks of things around here. minnesota bore the brunt of this nasty weather system with some spots getting 16 inches of snow. it was the single heaviest snowfall the state has seen in two years. the snow piled up across the midwest this weekend with blizzard-like conditions stretching from the dakotas to wisconsin and minnesota. wind and snow made for a lethal combination on the roadways, whether traveling by bike or car. across minnesota, officials reported more than 950 spin-outs and nearly 600 car accidents. at least one of them fatal. it took a whole crew to free this truck from the snow pile in minneapolis sunday. at a snow covered minneapolis/st. paul airport, around 150 flights were cancelled. though at least one runway managed to stay open. snow fell on the state at a rate of one inch per hour. the twin cities got 10 inches. that's nearly half of what the area saw all of last season. still that didn't stop diehard football fans from tailgating ahead of the minnesota vikings-chicago bears game. >> couldn't be better. this is minne

ellison of minnesota when we return. stay with us. ♪ >>> welcome back to continuing coverage of the tragedy in newtown, connecticut. people have packed churches in newtown, connecticut tonight in memory of the children and the adults killed at sandy hook elementary school. we continue to follow late-breaking developments here tonight. police and fbi agents are still on the scene at this hour. the gunman shot 20 children and seven adults in newtown before 10:00 this morning. school is supposed to be a safe place. the massacre at columbine high school should have been a wake-up call. but shootings on school campuses have increased over the past 13 years. this february a teenager fired into a cafeteria in chadron, ohio. this morning's shooting is one of many horrible tragedies. these are the worst in our history, and all of them have happened since columbine. a man gunned down 32 students at virginia tech back in 2007. a teen took a gun to school and killed nine people in minnesota. teens died at the school shooting in michigan. and five children were gunned down at a amish scho

's shooting was gunned down as she held the little girl. this unfolded in southeast d.c., minnesota avenue/18th street. darcy spencer has more. and where police are turning in their search for the gunman. >> reporter: d.c. police told me the woman stepped on to this metro bus when she was shot several times. she had a baby in her arms. d.c. police tell me a woman in her 20s was shot and killed after boarding a metro bus in southeast d.c., sunday afternoon. police believe she was holding her daughter, the little girl, under 3-year-old was also injured, possibly grazed by a bullet. police took pictures of a pink umbrella stroller near the shooting scene. >> the woman appeared targeted and was hit multiple time. >> the woman was shot, 5:30 at 18th and minnesota. the bus driver drove a block and stopped and called 911. this man said he heard about four shots. >> i just ran out here. see what was going on. i went over there. and saw that body laying on the bus. had the little baby. somebody was holding the baby. a lot of blood on the baby. >> investigators spent hours collecting evidence inside th
